The North corresponds to Water. It is governed by Zhuānxū, assisted by Xuánmíng, who holds the balance and governs Winter. Its celestial body is Chénxīng (Mercury), its sacred beast is the Black Tortoise, its musical note is Yǔ, and its associated days are Rén and Guǐ.

At the farthest extent of the North, starting from the Nine Marshes and reaching the uttermost limit of the summer’s end, ectends north to the valley of Lìngzhèng. It is a land of bitter cold, where ice accumulates, and snow, hail, frost, and sleet abound. A land soaked and crossed by many rivers. This territory, governed by Zhuānxū and Xuánmíng, spans 12,000 lǐ.
